Chapter Fifteen

“Wow, Lord. This is some place.” Maggie parked Mark’s jeep outside the front of Andrea’s home and was stunned by the setup.

“She’s got the big house, adorable barn, and it looks like they’re building another large structure in the back.”

Known for talking out loud to God, Maggie got out of the jeep and strode purposely up to the front door. Knocking, she prayed, “I leave tomorrow, Lord, help me to do what You brought me here to do before I leave.”

After a few moments, the door opened and a petite redhead stood there with a mixing bowl in her hands. “Sorry, I’d shake your hand to welcome you in, but I’ve got to keep mixing this or I will lose the entire batch.”

“It’s okay.”

“Are you here to see Andrea?” Bailey stepped back to let the tall, blonde inside the door. She paused, “You look familiar. Were you at the movie night on Friday evening?”

“Yes, I’m Maggie Miller.”

“Oh, Noah’s grandmother.”

Maggie chuckled, “Yes, also known as the ex-wife.”

Bailey blushed but secretly liked the direct woman. Do I need to block the door to keep her from coming in? Eyeing her discreetly, Bailey stepped back, “Come in. Does Andrea know you’re coming?”

“No, this is an impromptu visit.”

“Do I need to get the pitchfork?” Bailey eyed her appraisingly. She had better not be here to upset Mom. I could take the Amazon if I had to.

Maggie laughed out loud. “Good Lord, no. I’m here to tell your mother-in-law how wonderful Mark really is and see if I can’t help the two of them patch up whatever went wrong in January.”

“Well, in that case, come in. Mom’s in her cottage doing some paperwork, but I’m sure she’d love the distraction.”

We’ll see. Maggie kept the comment to herself but followed the spunky redhead through the front of the house to a small hallway off the side.

“This is the entrance to the mother-in-law suite, but we just call it the cottage. Andrea has never been a mother-in-law to me.” Knocking, Bailey turned to Maggie, blocking the door. “She means a lot to me.”

“Understood.” She couldn’t be clearer if she tried. I wonder if Andrea knows how fiercely she’s loved.

“It’s open.”

Bailey poked her head into Andrea’s living room. “Hey, Mom. You have a visitor. I’m going to leave the door open. Yell if you need me.”

Puzzled by Bailey’s comment, Andrea didn’t understand until Maggie stepped into her living room. Shoot, Lord, why did I still have to be in yoga pants from my walk with Muffin this morning? I wish I owned a pair of four-inch heels to wear around this Amazon.

Andrea stood and motioned for the woman to sit down. “Would you like something to drink? Tea, coffee...”

“Coffee would be nice.”

Walking to the small kitchen, Andrea pulled out an extra mug and started the second pot of the morning. She watched as Maggie sat on the sofa and began to pet Muffin. What’s going on here?

“You have a sweet dog.”

“Thank you, she’s from the animal shelter. I’ve only had her a few months.
